Goo Goo Dolls lead singer hospitalised, South African tour postponed to March 2025
The lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls, John Rzeznik, has been hospitalised following his pneumonia diagnosis on December 1, leading to the postponement of their Cape Town and Pretoria performances next week to March 2025.
NEW dates have been announced for the South African leg of the Goo Goo Dolls’ tour following the hospitalisation of lead singer, John Rzeznik, who was diagnosed with pneumonia recently. Rzeznik was admitted to hospital on Sunday, December 1, just a few days shy of the band’s much anticipated concert in Cape Town from December 4 to December 7.
Tour promoters Goodlife Productions and Amp Events issued a statement confirming the “unavoidable postponement of the Goo Goo Dolls’ concert in Cape Town”. The tour has been postponed to March 25 until 29, 2025. “It is deeply regrettable for this postponement to happen so close to the event, knowing how many plans have already been made by fans, performers and organising teams alike. However, John’s health must come first, and we are deeply grateful for the understanding and kindness from fans during this time. The band remains committed to delivering the unforgettable experience you’ve been waiting for, and we can’t wait to welcome them back to South Africa in March 2025,” said the organisers in a statement.
“Pneumonia is a serious condition, especially for a vocalist whose health and voice are central to their craft. Performing while unwell could have lasting effects, so as fans of the Goo Goo Dolls, we fully support John in prioritising his recovery.”

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Rzeznik expressed his sorrow at being unable to tour and his gratitude to the band’s loyal fans. He said, “We are heartbroken to postpone our South Africa shows. This country means so much to us, and we were so excited to create more memories with you. Sadly, my doctor has advised rest and recovery. Thank you for your understanding – we’ll make it worth the wait when we return in March 2025.”
Rzeznik’s diagnosis and hospitalisation has sent shockwaves throughout the world with fans sending well wishes. On social media Candice McDonald wrote, “Take the time you need to focus on recovering and get back your health”, while Mariëtte Redelinghuys said, “We were looking forward to the Pretoria show this weekend, but a person’s health and wellbeing is way more important. Get well and take care. It give us more time to learn all the lyrics so that we can sing along.” (sic) Their sentiments were echoed by Nathalie Baret who wrote, “I am so sorry to hear that, hope you will have a speedy recovery. Happy early Birthday, I hope you will be back home with your family on your special day.” (sic)
