Creating Joy at Tafta this Festive Season
In line with its tradition, Tafta is gearing up to bring cheer to its residents this festive season. Community members' donations are sought to ensure that the campaign yields joyous results for the elderly. A small act of kindness may bring a broad smile and merry moments.
THE Association for The Aged (Tafta) is in the middle of their annual Christmas campaign that started in mid-November and runs until the end of December. This most coveted tradition has for many years ensured that thousands of elders celebrate Christmas with a smile, bringing joy, connectedness and meaning to older persons residing at Tafta’s 13 homes.
The Christmas campaign seeks to raise funds towards providing a delicious three-course meal to every resident, served at a table laden with festive décor and surrounded by their friends – all adding to the cheery atmosphere the season calls for.
Tafta CEO Femada Shamam explained the impact this time of year can have on an older person, saying, “With many cherished memories of their childhood and their life as a young adult, older persons often reminisce about ‘the good old days’. This especially happens during auspicious times in the year when family gatherings and celebrations are to be expected.”

“Our new reality is that more and more young families and children are migrating or living far away in pursuit of better opportunities that will enable them to provide the financial support needed for an older person’s care. This distance between an elder and their loved ones creates a longing for companionship and an unfulfilled yearning to recreate those childhood memories they hold so dear.”
Tafta has made it their annual dedication to gift elders the joy of sharing Christmas among friends. “When you look at the smiles on the faces of elders at our Christmas lunches, there is no doubt – happiness can be created. And Tafta is calling on you to spread joy at our homes this festive season. With every R140 sponsored toward our lunches, an older person is gifted the excitement of getting dressed up in their best clothes and sitting down together at a festively decorated table surrounded by companionship, laughter, music and dancing. We invite you to be a part of this merry movement and make your own festive season one filled with joy, comforted by all the smiles you would bring and all the cheer you would spread through Tafta’s Christmas Campaign,” said Shamam.
