Excitement mounts as eThekwini hosts 2024 SALGA games

The City of Durban will be a hive of activity this weekend when the notorious SALGA Games take place, drawing scores of sports personalities and sports enthusiasts from all parts of the country.

ETHEKWINI has been confirmed as the host of the highly anticipated 2024 South African Local Government Association (SALGA) games.

City mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba announced the City’s readiness to host the 2024 edition on Friday.

Xaba said, “The City is going all-out to ensure we host a successful SALGA Games. As back-to-back winners of the tournament, Team eThekwini will go out all guns blazing and do their best.”

He said the tourism sector will receive a much-needed boost through the hosting of the games, and they will create temporary jobs.

Mayor Xaba added that the City is proud to have produced two shining stars through the games, the likes of Alwande Mngwengwe, who now plies his trade with Sekhukhune United, and Ronnel Donnelly of the Western Cape United Women’s Team.

“An amount of R40 million has been invested to upgrade and maintain our beaches and sporting facilities. We are only getting stronger as we work towards being an events and sporting capital. This year’s games promise to be nothing short of spectacular,” said Mayor Xaba.

Ten district municipalities, together with eThekwini Municipality, will battle it out across 13 sporting codes from December 5 to 8.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Sports, Arts and Culture Mtomuhle Khawula said the collaborative effort from all stakeholders should be applauded and continues to show unity across the province. This popular event hopes to ignite the tourism and hospitality industries, too.

“Thank you to eThekwini for hosting us. Various sectors will benefit from these games – and we promise to put our best foot forward. Youth development continues to take centre stage,” said MEC Khawula.
