Bather succumbs to injuries at Wedge Beach

Despite efforts to resuscitate him, a male believed to be in his 30s has died in a drowning incident at Wedge Beach this morning.

A MAN, believed to be in his 30s, has died at Wedge Beach in Durban this morning despite efforts to revive him by eThekwini Metro Police Search and Rescue and lifeguards.

The man is suspected to have drowned after struggling against the waves while swimming at the popular beach on Wednesday, around 08:00. Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics said they responded to a drowning incident at Wedge Beach on Durban’s beachfront.

He said, “Paramedics arrived on scene to find Metro Police Search and Rescue, together with lifeguards attempting to resuscitate a male believed to be in his 30s, who had suffered a drowning incident in the ocean. Despite paramedics from multiple ambulance services’ best efforts, the patient succumbed due to his injuries. At this stage, the exact events leading up to the drowning are unknown. However, SAPS and necessary authorities that were in attendance will be investigating further.”

Meanwhile, the eThekwini Municipality has urged caution, asking people to swim in designated areas at the specified times. Additional seasonal workers have been recruited by the municipality to be deployed to various tourist destinations. They include lifeguards and 105 swimming pool attendants who are tasked with ensuring the safety of bathers.
