KZN Matric Triumph: Class of 2024 achieves 89.5% pass rate and tops nation in distinctions
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is in high spirits at the Durban ICC where the province's top matriculants are set to be announced following their excellent performance and results in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

THE KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Class of 2024 obtained an impressive pass rate of 89.5%, marking an increase of 3.2% from 2023. This achievement has the KZN Department of Education elated as they pursue their goal of reaching a 90% pass rate in the NSC exams.
Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said, “Looking at the Class of 2024 results, this is now attainable.”

He added, “As the Department, we are happy with the results and would like to congratulate all the matriculants and educators on this achievement. The results goes to show that we can achieve a 90% pass rate which is what we are targeting.”
KZN, which had the highest number of matriculants writing the NSC exam, achieved the most distinctions. The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, said that overall the Class of 2024 achieved an impressive number of 319 651 distinctions.
She said, “This represents a significant increase of over 65 000 distinctions from last year. Some of these increases were seen in key subjects, including mathematics. I am pleased to report that every province increased the number of distinctions achieved in 2023. KwaZulu-Natal was once more the top performing province in terms of the percentage of candidates obtaining distinctions, with 10.8% distinction potential achieved.”
Among the top matriculants acknowledged at the Durban ICC event is Owethu Shangase from John Wesley Kosi Bay Private School who has been recognised as one of the top performers nationally.
