One more year to four zero – treating my mind, body and soul well

So it's my last year in my 30s. I turn 39 in July and I have given my (bad) habits much thought.

Dear old people. I was wrong, you were right. Getting into bed by 21:00, waking up by 05:30, enjoying that quiet cup of coffee before the world is up and poking around the garden, soaking up some sun and getting fresh air are the best things on Earth. I apologise for thinking you guys were insane.

Turning 40 (only next year though) can be a milestone that prompts deep reflection and change. For many, it’s a wake-up call to take health, habits, and personal growth more seriously. As I approached this new decade, I found myself making small but impactful shifts in my daily life.

I became more focused on my health — eating better, prioritising sleep, and ensuring I got my steps in. I even challenged myself to quit sugar for 40 days, a test of willpower that surprisingly left me feeling more energised.

One Friday night, instead of sipping on a Gin and Tonic, I found myself sipping herbal tea and preparing for a cleanse. The devil on my shoulder was like: “Where is Candyce and what have you done with her?”

It was a quiet but powerful moment, signaling a shift in my priorities. I also began spending more time outdoors, appreciating the fresh air and the simple joy of movement.

Journaling became another new habit, helping me process thoughts and track my progress. Alongside that, I got serious about setting goals — not just in my head, but in a tangible way. I created a vision board, giving myself a clear strategy for what I wanted to achieve.

In many ways, these changes weren’t just about turning 40. They were about stepping into a new chapter with intention, focus, and a renewed commitment to self-care.

After all, life doesn’t slow down at 40 — it gets better with purpose.
