Kings Park Pool renovations to be completed in April

Over R40 million was re-allocated by the eThekwini Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit to maintain and upgrade the Kings Park Swimming Pool complex. Key improvements include the installation of 1500 LUX lighting, glass window replacements, and non-slip coatings for stairs and paving.

MULTI-MILLION rand upgrades and repairs are underway at eThekwini’s Kings Park Swimming Pool complex, with the maintenance work set to be completed by the end of April.

South Africa’s only FINA (International Swimming Federation) accredited pools, recognised by the International Olympic Committee for hosting international water sports competitions, were closed in November to allow for the renovations. Nondumiso Mathomane, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, said the city is spending R43 million on the upgrades and repairs to the swimming pool.

“This upgrade forms part of the City’s ongoing maintenance programme for all municipal swimming venues,” said Mathomane. “The current refurbishment focuses on repairing infrastructure damaged by strong winds last year. Key improvements include the installation of 1500 LUX lighting, glass window replacements, non-slip coatings for stairs and paving, upgrades to walkway structures and handrails, a complete overhaul of two canteen areas, plastering and painting, new signage, a scoreboard, and diving boards.”

The Kings Park Swimming Complex features both indoor and outdoor facilities. The indoor section boasts a 50m swimming pool, while the outdoor area includes a 25m long, 6.5m deep diving pool.

The state of the facility had deteriorated over the years due to a lack of maintenance by the Parks Recreation and Culture Unit. Last year, council approved the re-prioritisation funds for the rehabilitation of Kings Park Pool and various projects within the unit. An amount of R43m was approved by Council and the site was handed over for the commencement of work on December 9.

Mathomane said, “Weather permitting, the repairs are expected to be completed by the end of April.”
