Umbilo CPF wins top honours at district awards

Dedication and a burning desire to keep streets safer have seen Umbilo CPF excel in recent crime and safety awards. The leadership attributes their victory to solid collaborations the forum has forged with different crime-fighting entities in the area.

THE Umbilo Community Policing Forum (CPF) has been recognised as the Best CPF in the eThekwini North District, securing three major awards at the recent district awards ceremony for 2023/24.

The CPF was awarded 1st Place – Best CPF in eThekwini North District, 1st Place – Best Impactful Project by a CPF, and 2nd Place – Best Spiritual Crime Prevention Initiative.

The Umbio CPF PRO, Doug Mellish, enthused, “These accolades highlight the ongoing efforts of the Umbilo CPF, SAPS, private security, and community members in driving crime reduction strategies and fostering a safer environment for all residents. The precinct has made remarkable progress, moving from being one of the worst 30 in KwaZulu-Natal to ranking among the top 10 in the province for crime prevention and policing efficiency.”

CPF chairman Calvin Thomas credited the community’s collective efforts for this achievement, stating, “These awards are a testament to the tireless collaboration between the community, private security, and SAPS. Whether through active patrols, strategic crime-fighting projects, or social crime prevention initiatives, our commitment to safety is stronger than ever. We are proving that when communities take ownership of their security, real change happens.”

Umbilo SAPS Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ximba, praised the CPF’s leadership and its role in crime prevention. “I congratulate the CPF and its leadership on this well-deserved recognition. These awards reflect the hard work and dedication of a community that refuses to be passive in the fight against crime. SAPS cannot achieve crime prevention alone, and the Umbilo CPF has shown what is possible through strong community involvement,” he added.

“The Umbilo CPF remains committed to innovative crime-fighting strategies, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that community-driven safety initiatives continue to make an impact,” Mellish added.
