Durban has a lot to offer this time of year especially with Father’s Day around the corner.

DURBAN always delivers when it comes to music concerts, an obstacle course fundraiser or an environmental swim. Get out and enjoy some of the events listed for this month below.

Dive in for the environment [Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15]

The Oceans 8 Charity Swim returns to Vetch’s Beach, Durban Undersea Club, on June 14 and 15, bringing together passionate swimmers, ocean lovers, and change-makers for a challenge that goes beyond the waves.

Founded by charities for charities, this feel-good, warm-water swim will raise funds for 14 non-profits across KZN.

Since its launch in 2023, Oceans 8 has raised over R1.7m, directly benefiting 23 charities working in education, environmental conservation, and community upliftment.

The unique, two-day event invites participants to find a mile to suit their style, with distances from 1-mile, 4-mile, 8-mile as well as a challenging 16-mile swim.

Chill out with Father’s Day concert  [Sunday, June 15]

The next Old Mutual Music at the Lake concert has everything for the whole family and Father’s Day. It takes place on Sunday, June 15.

The concert features two iconic South African bands, Just Jinjer and Watershed, live in the magical setting of the Durban Botanic Gardens.

This year’s Old Mutual Music at the Lake series returns to its stunning setting around the lake, bringing people together for good music, good memories, and a good cause.

Good to know
The concert takes place at the Durban Botanic Gardens on Sunday, June 15 and gates open at 13:00 (the concert starts at 14:00).
Food and drinks are welcome and concert-goers are encouraged to bring their picnic blankets and camping chairs.

Joyful celebration with Soprano [Sunday, June 15]

Friends of Music will host Soprano Nontobeko Bhengu at a concert at the Durban Jewish Centre on Sunday, June 15.

Bhengu has graced various stages, including Ubuntu Opera, The Magic Flute, The Tales of Hoffman Opera, and Dalinda Opera. She recently received the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Best Opera Performance – Female.

Joining her at the performance will be Dr. Lisa Engelbrecht, a Soprano and collaborative pianist, and guest tenor Zamo Zungu.

The programme for this concert includes sacred music, Italian operatic gems, Lieder and a few South African favourites.

The show takes place on Sunday June 15 (14:30) at the Durban Jewish Centre, North Beach.
Tickets are R140 and R50 for students (available at the door).

Take a steam train ride [Sunday, June 15]

The 1000 Hills Tourism presents Umgeni Steam Railway Father’s Day Train Trips which depart from and return to Inchanga Station on Father’s Day, June 15, throughout the day from 09:00 until 15:00.

Every hour there will be short trips departing from Inchanga Station.

No booking is required. Trips are R80 per person.

Before or after your trip, you can browse through the Inchanga Station Craft Market where there are various treasures on sale, food to suit most tastes and activities for the whole family.

Conquer obstacle course for baby home [Monday, June 16]

One of the highlights for The Baby Home Durban North’s fundraising calendar is their annual Conquer event.

Conquer is a fun, non-timed obstacle course race (OCR) team event where the emphasis is on fun, teamwork and helping each other overcome obstacles, all for a good cause.

This year there is a twist, as the home is combining the obstacle course with a colour run.

There will be different stations with different coloured paints and participants are encouraged to wear T-shirts or clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty.

Good to know
The team event takes place on Monday, June 16 at Adventure Obstacle Training (AOT) at Redwood College La Lucia, 34 Ronan Road.
Teams of six can compete and it costs R700 per team.
There are a number of lucky draw prizes up for grabs.

The Rhumbelow Film Club is inviting film lovers to join them to get together this year (from January to July). Enjoy the notion of an old-fashioned movie night out with friends and affordable snacks (other than popcorn) at 42 Cunningham Road, Umbilo. Food is available at the venue. Booking is essential.
