Spike in car theft in North Beach concerns police
Police have noted a rise in car theft crimes in the area around North Beach, with multiple incidents involving tourists and beachgoers. Two suspects were nabbed and appeared in court, presenting a breakthrough for police.
THE Durban beachfront, particularly North Beach, is seeing an increase in visitors; however, police report that the area is “well-known for crimes related to motor-vehicle theft”.
Durban Central SAPS’s Tourist Unit were reportedly policing and monitoring cases of theft-out-of-motor vehicles and car theft along the beachfront when they arrested two suspects for possession of car break-in implements, as well as for possession of goods suspected to be stolen.
According to Durban Central SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Zanele Khomo, “On Saturday at about 21:00, our members were patrolling along Snell Parade, North Beach, when they spotted a white Hyundai vehicle which was earlier circulated as stolen.

“Members stopped the said vehicle with two occupants. Upon searching, suspect one was found in possession of car break-in implements, and another suspect was found in possession of property suspected to be stolen. The suspects, aged between 41 and 45, were arrested and charged.”
Khomo added that the area was well-known for crimes related to motor vehicles.
“This was a breakthrough for us when the two suspects were arrested and the vehicle was seized. The suspects were profiled and linked to cases of house robbery, rape, and murder which took place in the Durban central area earlier this year,” shared Khomo.
The suspects appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Monday), and were remanded in custody pending bail application.
