Fischer Street drug bust brings hope to community

A major drug supplier in Durban’s Point area has been arrested after police recovered heroin, cocaine and ecstasy worth over R570 000.

Members from the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit arrested a 23-year-old suspect in the Point area for dealing in drugs and recovered a large quantity of drugs.

“The team has been hard at work in trying to unmask an individual who was supplying drugs to various dealers. The hard work paid off when a sting operation was conducted on Tuesday at a premises on Fischer Street at Point, and the following drugs were recovered: 5830 capsules of heroine powder, 4543 pieces of rock cocaine, and 178 ecstasy tablets,” shared SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza.

He added that the suspect was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs. The recovered drugs are estimated to be valued at R570 000. An amount of R157  270 in cash was also recovered on the premises.

Point CPF Chairperson Mandla Cebekhulu applauded the much-needed drug bust. Earlier this month, the community of Point, together with the CPF and law enforcement officers, gathered on Fischer Street for a GBV awareness campaign, where it was highlighted that drug use was a major contributor to violence.

“This is good news indeed. Learning that a drug dealer was caught and drugs were recovered brings hope to the community. The area of Point is very problematic when it comes to drugs, and it has always been our wish to employ aggressive measures to eradicate the scourge.
“It is sad to see so many young people and young adults loitering in the streets, homeless. These people were once functional and productive members of society, but drugs took over,” said Cebekhulu.

He commended the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit for their efforts, hoping that those dealers who are still in hiding get the message. He also emphasised the significance of protecting whistle-blowers, who together with SAPS and CPF, can help restore Point to the respectful and liveable place it used to be.

The suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
