Concerns over escalating false reporting, hijacking cases in Berea

Berea CPF has flagged a rise in serious crimes, identified key hotspots and outlined steps residents can take to improve safety in 2026.

IN its recently released report, Berea CPF highlighted several growing crimes in the area, sharing what it believes are measurable initiatives to make a difference in 2026.

Berea CPF treasurer Shikar Sampath emphasised that the forum, in partnership with Berea SAPS, remained committed to actively addressing crime and to improving safety.

“False reporting of cases has become a growing concern. Opening cases under false pretences (including to avoid repayment of personal loans or debts) is a criminal offence and will be investigated and dealt with severely by Berea SAPS. Residents and businesses are encouraged to report all crimes promptly and truthfully to Berea SAPS. Accurate reporting enables effective policing, proper allocation of resources, and informed CPF safety planning,” Sampath shared.

Outlining crime trends in the Berea area, as identified by police, Sampath indicated an increase in motor vehicle theft, hijackings, house break-ins, theft out of motor vehicles, and illegal firearms circulating within the community. He stressed that community co-operation is essential to curb these crimes.

And the crime hotspots? Sampath listed high-risk areas and times of committed crimes. Botanic Gardens and King Dinuzulu Road remain at the centre of criminal activities. High-risk periods are 07:00 to 09:00, and 15:30 to 18:00.
He reminds motorists not to leave valuables in clear view. “Items such as cellphones, laptops, handbags, and wallets attract smash-and-grab incidents.”
