R27m worth of counterfeit goods seized in Sydenham
Durban Metro Police seize R27m in contraband cellphone accessories and arrest 14 individuals in Sydenham bust.
Yesterday (February 24) Durban Metro Police Service, as part of a multi-disciplinary law enforcement, participated in a large-scale Search and Seizure Operation in Sydenham.
Metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu gave details of the operation. “At premises on Felix Dlamini Road, members discovered a business operating with non-compliant and suspected contraband goods. Fourteen individuals found to be in contravention of the Immigration Act (illegal immigrants) were detained for further processing, along with the employer.”

Zungu added, “Over 14 million cellphone accessories were seized with an estimated value of recovered goods at R27m. The goods were handed over to Customs for further investigation and analysis.
“Additional charges under the Customs & Excise Act and Counterfeit Goods Act were effected. The employer was also arrested for employing illegal immigrants.
“This operation demonstrates strong collaboration between Metro Police and various national and provincial law enforcement agencies in disrupting illicit trade networks that negatively impact the economy and legitimate businesses.”
