Glenwood teen petitions for skate park dream
A Glenwood skateboarder has started a petition to propel the eThekwini Municipality to realise her dream of a skate park in the area.
Young Jemiah Hough reckons the construction of a skate park in Glenwood would be a game changer. She pleads for support by signing a petition, with no monetary contribution involved. The more the signatures, the closer her dream, she says.
“I am a determined, young woman, trying to make a dream possible for many of my friends and the community. I decided to start a petition for a community skateboard park in Bulwer Park. We currently have 60 signatures so far and it is growing,” she said.
As a passionate skater living in Glenwood, she said she has firsthand experience of the challenges they face without a local skate park.
“Not every skater has the means or transport to reach the North Beach skate park. This absence of a dedicated space for skating in our community not only limits opportunities for skill development but also places skaters in conflict with pedestrians on jogging and walking routes.

“The lack of a proper facility forces street skaters to use paths meant for other purposes, inadvertently leading to misunderstandings and, at times, resentment from the community. By building a community skate park in Bulwer Park, Glenwood, we can address these issues and foster a more harmonious environment,” the 16-year-old stated.
She added, “Creating a skate park will not only provide a safe location for skaters but also promote a community spirit. It will serve as a hub for skaters of all levels to share their skills and learn from each other. This is especially beneficial for beginners, who often feel isolated and unsupported when they’re just starting out. A localised skate park would also attract experienced skaters who can mentor these newcomers, resulting in a stronger, supportive community.”

The Glenwood Ratepayers and Residents Association is behind her, and has pledged full support of the petition and beyond, as they feel there is a need for some sort of sports park or sports arena that the youth can safely enjoy.
In conclusion Hough shared, “Now is the time for eThekwini Municipality to prioritise this essential community project. Let us unite to create a safe, inclusive space for skaters in Glenwood. Please sign the petition to show your support for building a community skate park in Bulwer Park. Together, we can make a positive impact on our community and ensure that skaters have the facilities they deserve.”
