Durban Collegians Club turns 120

In a landmark celebration of 120 years Durban Collegians Club collected many awards in the lower leagues,.

IT was an evening of history meets present, a joyous celebration of the Durban Collegian Club’s 120 years of existence. Older rugby players and team officials recently socialised with the younger breed who have all contributed to the century-old Durban landmark.

Club chairman Ian Losinsky shared, “This moment is about celebration, as the club turns 120 years. Gathered here are Collegians in their eighties, down to the current players in their twenties.

“As we mark this day, we highlight three things: the formation celebration, the tradition known as Sign The Register, as well as the change of guard and handing over of the baton to younger Collegians.”

The oldest Collegian at 86 years old, Trix Truter is a former player and coach, with a colourful mark in the Springboks.

The club was formed on March 14, 1906, originally known as the Old Collegians Rugby Football Club. Despite some challenges in its infancy, the Collegians have, to date, won the Castle Lager Murray Cup and the Moor Cup more times than any other club in the history of those competitions, including winning the Moor Cup for 17 years in a row.

In celebratory mode, old and young Collegians celebrate 120 years of glory.

The Collegians have also produced Springbok and 7s Springboks players over the years. Others went on to play for international clubs.
“Collegians have a wonderful rugby heritage; not difficult to understand why, from a Natal point of view, March 14 1906 was to become one of the most important dates in the history of the game in Natal,” Losinsky concluded.
