Efforts to raise voice of homeless in LGE 2026

Local Government Elections are looming and the homeless aim to have their voices raised, and their crosses seen on the ballot paper.

AS the hype of the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE) escalates, the homeless around Durban have a part to play in electing the next administration.

According to the director of the Denis Hurley Centre, Raymond Perrier, the National Homeless Network, in partnership with the IEC, will support the homeless by helping them obtain the necessary identification.

“Also, by ensuring that they are registered as voters, educating them about the importance of voting, and by making sure voting is accessible on Election Day, November 4,” shared Perrier.

“It is important for the homeless people, the vast majority of whom are adult South African citizens, whose lives are directly affected by the municipality, often negatively. Archbishop Denis Hurley and many others fought hard for the right of everyone to vote – we owe it to them to exercise this right.

“It is equally important that everyone who is entitled to vote does so. Our lives are affected every day, but who is in charge in City Hall, and this way we get a chance to determine who is there.”

The public is urged to join a webinar on May 13, at 10:30, where the IEC and experts will discuss the drafting of the National Homeless Manifesto. Pre-registration via this link tinyurl.com/Elections13May is essential.
