Naval team cooks up victory at veterans’ potjie showdown

Military veterans showcased their cooking skills, camaraderie and unit pride at the second annual Battle of the Veterans potjie competition.

THE second annual Oumanne Military Association’s Battle of the Veterans potjie competition brought the heat to Durban at the weekend.

The event, hosted at the Queen Nandi Mounted Rifles on Saturday, saw several teams cook up a storm, with 2025 winners Neels Meyer and Leo Robinson returning to defend their title.

However, it was team Naval SAS Jalsena Jan 87 that claimed top honours with a winning mutton potjie served with creamy samp and vegetables.

Team captain Jayson Naidoo said the winning combination was complemented by the cooking skills of chef Rajesh Sewparshad.

The teams’ efforts were applauded by Oumanne co-founders Rupert Meyer and Wally Coombe, who hailed the event as a success.

“It was a day of camaraderie and laughter,” said Coombe. “Veterans were very proud to show off their unit’s regalia and skills, which they displayed with pride.”
