THE South African Weather Service has upgraded its inclement weather warning for parts of eThekwini from Level 4 to Level 6 throughout this evening (July 28) until Wednesday, July 29.

Municipal spokesperson Mandla Nsele said this substantially increases the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas and encouraged residents to stay indoors during severe storms.

“Act responsibly and treat this Level 6 warning with the highest level of seriousness, as the anticipated impacts pose a real and immediate threat to lives, property and infrastructure,” said Nsele.

“Secure loose items around their homes, unplug electrical appliances during lightning activity, and closely monitor children, the elderly and other vulnerable persons.”

The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate, Emergency Services and all relevant directorates have been placed on high alert and are prepared to respond swiftly to any incidents.

“Residents are strongly urged to remain vigilant and take all necessary steps to protect life and property. Communities in high‑risk areas should move to safer, higher ground where possible and must avoid crossing flooded roads, rivers, and bridges under any circumstances.

“Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution, as poor visibility, flooding, and slippery road surfaces will create hazardous driving conditions. Unnecessary travel should be avoided,” said Nsele.

He added that this weather alert remains subject to change as conditions develop, and residents are encouraged to monitor official municipal communication platforms for updates.
