THE Durban beachfront will be awash with colour this weekend as scores of people gather for the annual Durban Beach Sari Stroll on Sunday, August 2, at 09:00.

The event celebrating culture, diversity and social cohesion, attracts thousands of people each year from different backgrounds and communities to walk together along the Durban Beachfront Promenade in a vibrant display of inclusivity and shared heritage.

Founded in 2010 by Kammy Gounden, the Durban Beach Sari Stroll has grown into one of the city’s most recognisable cultural events. Participants dressed in brightly coloured saris and traditional attire will take part in the iconic beachfront stroll, which organisers say is about far more than fashion.

“The Durban Beach Sari Stroll represents the beauty of our diversity as South Africans. It creates a platform where people can celebrate their heritage while embracing one another’s cultures in a positive and meaningful way,” said the organisers.

The event aims to promote social cohesion, nation building, cultural understanding and greater community participation while celebrating South Africa’s multicultural identity.

One of the event’s defining features is its inclusive approach. People who do not own a sari are encouraged to participate, with volunteers on hand to assist with sari draping on the day, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to experience the tradition.

Organisers believe the event also plays an important role in showcasing Durban as a welcoming destination that embraces diversity while contributing to tourism and supporting local economic activity.

This year’s programme will include the signature beachfront sari stroll, cultural performances, live entertainment, family-friendly activities and opportunities for cultural exchange.

The organisers have extended an invitation to members of the public, community organisations, and sponsors to be part of the celebration. The Durban Beach Sari Stroll takes place on Sunday, August 2, from 09:00 along the Durban Beachfront Promenade and all are invited.
