Burman Bush Nature Reserve joins South Africans in commemoration of Heritage Month. It is hosting senior citizens for a guided walk through the 55-hectare coastal forest, a remnant of the original Durban Forest that once covered the Berea.

The walk will take place on Wednesday, September 23. Walk co-ordinator Christine Sole said this is the first and the only offering for this year, and they hope to do at least three in 2027.

“September, besides heralding our hemisphere’s spring time, is designated ‘Heritage Month’ in South Africa. While it is easy to connect our vibrant and diverse cultures to heritage, our country’s natural heritage of flora and fauna is often overlooked. Besides, an immense biodiversity of plant and animal species make it one of the world’s recognised biodiversity hotspots.

“Senior rangers, and environmental education volunteer, myself, will render an opportunity of a relaxed and informative walk through this historic green space, just a few kilometres form Durban’s city centre,” Sole said.

“The whole walk will be approximately one and a half hours at a reasonable pace with a brief stop at a picnic site midway. However, there will be a point of return to the start after half an hour’s stroll along a relatively flat path through the forest. The second part of the morning comprises a walk up the old road, viewing plants and listening to bird calls along the way,” Sole added.

Participants are requested to arrive for an introduction at 08:45 for set off time at 09.00. The walk is free and requires a moderate level of fitness.
