VIDEO: AKA’s father pleased that son’s murder trial is underway
The trial of the seven men accused of murdering artist AKA is underway in the Durban High Court. They have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The father of the late Hip Hop artist AKA says he is happy that his son’s murder trial is finally underway.
Tony Forbes was speaking to the Berea Mail at the Durban High Court on Tuesday (October 6), where the murder trial of his son Kiernan Jarryd “AKA” Forbes and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane is taking place.
AKA and Motsoane met their untimely demise on February 10 2023, following a shooting outside of the now defunct Wish restaurant on Florida Road.

The accused, Lindokuhle Thabani Mkhwanazi, Lindani Zenzele Ndimande, Siyanda Eddie Myeza, Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, Lindokuhle Mhlaliseni Mkhwanazi, Malusi Dave Ndimande and Siyabonga Gezani Ndimande face numerous charges, including two counts of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and firearm and ammunition-related charges. All seven suspects have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Forbes said he was happy that the trial was underway.
“It was important for me that it started somewhere, so I’m satisfied that it has started and that work has been done to prepare for it and I think the team is ready for the game to start.”
He said that he was, however, still nervous about what he would see and hear from what is presented in court, including seeing images of the crime scene.
Forbes said that he hoped justice would prevail.
“Our children’s lives were taken away so we want justice. We want to know the truth. It will never take away the loss. The loss and the pain will always be with us,” adding that it was important to understand what happened in order to get some measure of closure from the trauma.
He said that he still felt the loss of his son and coming to terms with it was still a challenge for him.
“I still hear his music and I hear his voice very often and I would enjoy it and get lost in the moment and very quickly I would realise that he is gone.”
Six of the seven suspects have applied for their cases to be heard separately from that of Myeza, who faces additional charges.
The State is opposing the applications for separate trials.
