R70m investment secured for Durban beachfront redevelopment

The City has announced a major move aimed at revitalising Durban’s Golden Mile after the closure of Surf Riders and Xpressions.

In a bid to rescue the business image of the Golden Mile and the nearby beachfront image, the City of eThekwini announced a “major milestone” on Tuesday, October 6.

The move comes against the backdrop of the closure of the popular eatery, Surf Riders Café, last week, followed by that of the surf shop, Xpression, this week. For the longest time, other popular outlets and hallmarks have either vacated or faced dereliction.

City spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila shared, “The eThekwini municipality’s programme to attract private investment to the Golden Mile has reached a key milestone. Preferred bidder Imvusa (Pty) Ltd has secured more than R70m to redevelop 137 Lower Marine Parade [near Joe Cool’s]. Total private-sector investment is expected to approach R100m once tenant fit-outs are complete”.

Construction is set to commence in January 2027 following the completion of statutory planning processes and the signing of leases.

“The project will expand the commercial footprint from 1700m² to 4000m², a 135% increase in usable space. Signed leases are in place with food and hospitality brands, including Steers, Fishaways, Debonairs Pizza, Wimpy, Milky Lane, Nonna’s Riviera, and Perere by Gushima. This introduces Nonna’s Riviera to Durban for the first time outside Johannesburg.”

The City added, “Construction was rescheduled from June 2026 to conclude legal proceedings for vacant possession. Remaining occupants must vacate by January 15, 2027, with site handover taking place immediately after.”

The development aims to open for trading during the 2027/28 festive season.
