Call for Durban pet owners in free rabies vaccination drive

A free rabies vaccination campaign takes place in Glenmore, Manor Gardens, Umbilo and Glenwood on October 13 and 14.

The KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (KZNDARD), in partnership with eThekwini Municipality, will conduct a free Rabies Vaccination Campaign in the Glenmore, Manor Gardens, Umbilo and Glenwood areas. The two-day programme will be from October 13-14.

The campaign is aimed at controlling the spread of rabies and protecting both pets and communities. All dog and cat owners are urged to bring their pets for free vaccination.

“The estimated target is approximately 900 companion animals, comprising both dogs and cats. This target is based on the anticipated community response to the vaccination campaign. A good turnout from pet owners will be essential in achieving the targeted number of animals vaccinated.

“The campaign is part of the annual rabies vaccination programme. In addition to maintaining routine annual vaccination coverage, the campaign aims to ensure that the area maintains its current status of having no reported rabies-positive cases originating from the area. Sustaining high vaccination coverage is important in preventing the introduction and spread of rabies,” said Vusi Khumalo, spokesperson for the KZNDARD.

At present, the department said, there are no positive rabies cases that have been reported from the area. “Continued annual vaccination and public awareness are therefore important preventive measures to maintain this status,” Khumalo said.

The public are requested to ensure dogs are on a leash and cats in a secure carrier.
