Shooting leaves one dead in Davenport

One person has sustained injuries and another shot dead after two shootings on Thursday night in Davenport.

A shooting incident in Davenport has left one injured and another in critical condition last night.

According to the Spokesperson for ALS Paramedics Garrith Jamieson, the scene took place on Clark Road and Esther Roberts Road.

He said that while the exact events leading up to the shooting were unknown, there was another shooting incident that transpired approximately a kilometer from his location.

“It is alleged that a shooting occurred here in an alleged attempted hijacking and not too far from here is another scene where a person has sustained fatal gunshot wounds and it is believed to be connected to this incident.”

Jamieson said that an individual had sustained critical injuries and had been stabilised by advanced life support paramedics before being rushed off to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

He said that in the initial scene depicted in the video, one person sustained critical injuries and had been stabilised by Advanced Life Support paramedics before being rushed off to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

“The second incident is on Ryde Avenue, which is about 500 meters to a kilometer away. Ryde Avenue has also been closed to allow police to process that scene.

As I said, a person has sustained fatal injuries as a result of gunshot wounds. SAPS is in attendance and will be investigating what led to this shooting incident.”

In a 01:15 video shared by ALS Paramedics, a section of the road is cordoned off. Members of the Durban Metro Police Services and ALS Paramedics are at the scene, while the SAPS members process it. A blue vehicle can be seen across the road, with a lot of gunshot holes.

Spokesperson for the Police in KwaZulu-Natal Colonel Robert Netshuinda has confirmed the incident.

“Police were conducting routine patrols when they spotted a man firing shots next to a BMW vehicle which was parked on Clark Road. Police responded and a shootout ensued between the police and the suspect. The suspect fled on foot and on Ryde Avenue and hijacked an e-hailing vehicle which had just dropped a client. The suspect drove the hijacked vehicle towards Che Guevara Road as he continued shooting.

A static deployment of both police and Metro Police officers on Che Guevara Road responded and the suspect was overpowered. He attempted to flee but he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a gate of a nearby house. He was declared dead at the scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who remains unknown at this stage, shot and injured the owner of the BMW which he attempted to hijack, and he was taken to hospital.”

Netshuinda said that reports claiming that a bystander or a student was hit with a stray bullet during the shootout are false and malicious.

He said that the suspect was unknown at this stage and that circulating media reports that the suspect is a foreign national are premature and unconfirmed. Police will release verified information in due time.

“Although several police vehicles were riddled with bullet holes, no police officer was injured during the shootout.”
