Fighting a losing battle

A resident feels signs and dedicated police patrols should help get rid of trucks which park illegally in Umbilo.

EDITOR – In response to the article published on 8 August regarding heavy trucks in Umbilo, I wish to add the following.

For the past seven years (as a resident in Teignmouth Road) I have been complaining about the problem and during that period we have had three ward councilors all of whom have fought a losing battle.

Diesel spillage, oil and litter cover Teignmouth and Hillier Roads not to mention the trucks that are parked with their engines running which causes the stench of diesel fumes wallowing through our homes – we cannot even park in front of our own property.

I have personally been a victim of physical abuse by the arrogant truck drivers. Can Nicole Graham explain how Metro Police are going to impound trucks that are in excess of 10 Tons- many with double trailers. My solution is to erect a number of visible signs banning trucks in excess of 10T and then designate two junior foot patrol police officers to patrol the area 24/7 handing out hefty spot fines to offenders.
