We are living in Dirtbin

A business owner in Helen Joseph Road is fed up with the smelly drains and litter in the road.

EDITOR – As a business owner in Helen Joseph Road, I am horrified by the rotten smell coming from the drains in the road.

It is so smelly down the whole stretch of the road that my customers can't even sit and eat at outside tables because of the stench. I have to throw Jeyes Fluid down the drains to help with the smell.

I have spoken to the ward councillor, but I want to know from eThekwini municipality, what they are doing to sort it out. I have only seen them come once to steam the drains. It was good for two weeks and then it was bad again.

It seems like we are fighting a losing battle. We need to get to the root of the problem, as this has been going on for a while.

I also want to know, what is it with people littering? We are living in Dirtbin, not beautiful Durban. I saw someone throwing a piece of paper down outside my restaurant, and when I told them to pick it up, they said why should they, as the municipality would clean it up.

Something needs to be done to sort out the dirt in our area.
