EDITOR – On the morning of 3 December between 7.45am and 7.50am, I was crossing Hillier Road towards Umbilo Queensmead Mall.
I saw a truck with a big container drive out of a 9 ton area, where he was parked. The truck needed a lot of space to come out from where he was parked, and he went over the middle lane and hit an oncoming vehicle.
The part of the truck that hit the vehicle was the right side of the trucks bull bar and it damaged the right side of the vehicle. I went to the driver to check if he was okay and he climbed out of the vehicle, and was shaking. The driver of the truck reversed back into the same parking to clear the road for oncoming traffic. The truck driver climbed out and I saw two women passenges in the truck. He spoke to the driver and exchanged information with him.
I contacted the Metro Police and the SAPS Umbilo in connection with the accident. Umbilo SAPS arrived and Metro Police arrived an hour later. A Metro officer approached us and asked about the accident and I told her the truck that caused the accident had already left. I asked her what the Metro Police were going do about the truck problem in our area, as this was a 9 ton area. She turned her back on me and got into her bakkie, and left the accident scene.
There were witnesses that noticed this.
