EDITOR – I hope some member of Catholic hierarchy will reply authoritatively on behalf of the Church to RN Stapersma's letter last week entitled 'Pope contradicts himself'.
In the meantime, allow me to make a few important comments. To date, Pope Francis has unfortunately scandalised practising Christians by some of his words and actions, and we must pray for him and implore God to send us a good Pope.
With regard to his contradictory comments on large families, may I highlight some Catholic teaching. Artificial contraception is always a grave mortal sin – do people realise that some artificial contraceptives are, in fact, abortificents? The important purpose of marriage is the procreation of children, co-operating with God for the populating of Heaven. As such, divine providence will always provide for large families who obey His laws and live in His grace. In very grave circumstances, Catholics may practise only natural family planning, only on a temporary basis, and only with the permission of the priest.
People who do not want the children God sends them in marriage should not get married, and sex outside of marriage is also a grave mortal sin. To get to Heaven we have to carry our crosses, which for people outside of marriage can mean controlling their concupiscence with a fervent prayer life and healthy after-hours sports and/or activities.
