Ripping off the elderly

A pensioner expresses her disgust after so many elderly people were scammed by the energy company yet the owners have no recourse.

EDITOR-I read with utter disgust the story on Friday 27 February 2015, regarding Lionel Stewart and Global Energy. The story is not unusual as this company has been operating for years under different names. But each time they focus on the elderly.

I was taken for R36,000.00 in August 2013. I had been to various police stations in Durban and all refused to lodge a complaint, saying it was a small claims court matter. I even got Capt Mkhize from Umbilo police at Deodar Road to speak to the owner of Renewable Energy. They recently changed to United Thermal Technology and now Global Energy. All managed by by the same person. I contacted Wendy Knowler, no response. Carte Blanche – no response, then contacted the consumer organisation, no response, contacted them again and still no response.

I spoke to my lawyer who advised not throwing good money after bad.

My question is can just anyone open a crooked business, rip people off blatantly and know that nothing will ever happen to them?

I still sit with two solar geysers and am paying off my Visa card R680 monthly plus interest for another 17 months. I too am a 70 year old.
