EDITOR – Reading the “noise” conversations being exchanged on the Save Our Berea Facebook page, it would appear that we have inadvertantly stumbled upon the reason urban D’urban decay is so far advanced.
The local government is governed by administrative and political structures, steadily working (we wish!) to ensure that, “By 2030, eThekwini Municipality will enjoy the reputation of being Africa’s most caring and liveable City, where all citizens live in harmony”. btw: in the slogan, 2030 used to be 2020, but we are further from the goal now than we were before the City moved the posts just after the Soccer World Cup.
Theoretically, the administrative clusters – now numbering 10 – have what it takes to make this City achieve the implementation of the eight-point-plan of its Integrated Development Plan (as adopted by full council on 30 May 2012). Theoretically, the political structure – numbering 205 councillors – has that too.
Practically, it is obvious the ANC does not have the will to achieve noble goals. They have demonstrated this in Council many times. Taking its casual (and often arrogant) stance as a lead, many admin staff also choose to shirk their duties and fail to work diligently to serve and maintain the City, even at the very street level.
Hence the perceptible decay of our City. Decay that is evident from one day to the next.
So the Eureka! moment is “ANC Rules!”
