Please don’t close the stables

A school pupil is urging the municipality to rethink their decision to close the Newmarket Stables.

EDITOR – I am feeling very sad that the stables in Durban are closing and cross at my town for doing this.

I go to school at Livingstone Primary School and I am 10 years old. Every day I make my mom drive past the Newmarket Stables on the way home so that I can get a quick look at these majestic creatures. I read in the newspapers that the stables were told that they had to move by the end of August 2015.

I love horses and my mom was about to sign me up for lessons there but now she cannot. Soon we will have no stables near us, as Mount Edgecombe stables are also being moved. For me to ride I would have to travel at least 20 minutes to get to the nearest stable.

I am feeling very sorry for all the horses that cannot be rehomed and that there are some really old horses who will have to be put down. This is not fair for the horses, this has been their home for a long time. How can we just move them?

What about the Durban Metro Police Horse Unit? Where will these horses go and how can they help our city if they are stabled far away? When our grade walked to Moses Mabhida Stadium, the police horses escorted us, it was the best part of my outing. Durban is very lucky to have these horses and it would not be the same without them.

Has the city looked at any other places? Do they need to take this treat from me?

What about the people who work there? Where can they go work now and will they have to move to be closer to other stables?

People of Durban, please help to save this amazing place. I would appreciate if all adults and children stand up and try to make our city know how sad we would be if they force the stables to close.

City of Durban, please do not close the stables, pretty please!

From a very sad horse lover.
