Cameras won’t help curb crime

A reader feels the municipality is wasting its time with installing CCTV cameras to curb crime.

EDITOR – I see that our eThekwini Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa is another person that misguidedly thinks that Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) is the panacea for all crime.

She added to the spin doctoring over the “is it a cellphone tower or is a CCTV mast” furore in the Glenwood area by saying that this would reduce crime.

In reality very few criminals are afraid of CCTV and given the fact that many cars on the road have missing or false number plates he comments about licence plate recognition cameras is even laughable.

CCTV is only effective if it is monitored 24 hours a day and this project will just be another pipedream to line a tenderpreneurs pocket at ratepayers expense.
