No thanks for years of service

A reader is shocked that journalists leaving the Independent Newspapers haven't been acknowledged for their years of service.

EDITOR – Quite a few long time journalist friends and acquaintances leave The Mercury and other “Independent” stable newspapers across the country today.

Most have worked there with dedication for many years, some for nearly four decades.

These ‘voluntary retrenchments’ are but the latest round in a war of attrition being waged by Iqbal Surve, as he slashes and burns what little is left of once fine and respected publications.

But what really angers me is that in today’s editions of both The Cape Times and The Mercury, I can’t see a single mention of these milestone events. No dedicated and thoughtful editorial of farewell, no paragraph of praise, not even a word of thanks.

Sadly, it’s merely what one has come to expect from Dr Surve’s newspapers.

For shame.
