Glenwood cricket team bowls over rivals

Rivals Glenwood and Maritzburg College met on the cricket field at the weekend in another closely contested match.

THIS weekend saw two classic rivals take to the cricket field as Glenwood hosted Maritzburg College on a windy day in Durban.

College were sent in to bat first and Glenwood’s opening bowler N Madwe once again proved to be a nightmare for the opening batsmen as two early wickets saw College in a spot of bother at 9/2.

Fortunately for the visiting team B Tallis (33) and P Zanone (58) constructed a mature and well played partnership of 94 before SA U19 star, A Phehlukwayo bowled Tallis. College continued to bat on but constant wickets restricted their run flow and saw them reach 205/8 in their 50 overs.

Glenwood’s innings did not start off well but a second wicket stand of 65 runs between G Wissing (32) and S Nhlebela (53) gave the home side the needed foundation to chase down the target. Most of the Glenwood batsmen got starts but couldn’t follow through allowing College to pull the game back in the middle period. A quick fire 20* from C Pearce eventually saw Glenwood take the game with 4 wickets to spare.
