Damp wicket hampers ‘Quins
Electing to bat first on a damp wicket did not bode well for 'Quins against UKZN on Saturday.
ANOTHER round of cricket was unilaterally cancelled by the Durban and District Cricket Union on 16 November 2013 as a result of rain and saturated wicket surfaces in the greater Durban area. By 1 December some teams would not yet have fulfilled just a single league match despite the scheduled season having commenced on 29 September. Most ‘Quins teams have completed a solitary match at this stage.
Despite the preceding rain, Sunday morning greeted ‘Quins first team cricket players with windless clear skies at the Hammondfield oval for the KZNCU encounter. However hopes of a scheduled start were dashed when some water was dumped on the eastern portion of the wicket and not immediately squeezed off the periphery. Also some moisture had leaked through onto the central area of the playing strip. All this resulted in a one hour forty five minute delay in commencement in order to facilitate drying.
Although ‘Quins won the coin toss, the decision to bat first on a sectionally damp wicket was most surprising and backfired with profound ramifications as ‘Quins were dismissed for a mere 62 runs. UKZN medium pacer and ex ‘Quins player Richard Wissing bowled a good line dismissing the top four batsmen for 21 runs off eight overs . Spinner Basoon took four wickets for 11 runs. Despite a damp wicket surface ‘Quins batsmen never applied themselves adequately, with the exception of Jordan Grobelaar who top scored 24 runs and number six batsmen Devan Dippenaar who managed 15 runs.
UKZN lost both opening batsmen, but suffered no further anomalies on the drying wicket which eased up considerably by the early afternoon. UKZN won by eight wickets and are currently at the helm of the KZN stream one challenge League.
There are no home games scheduled for Quins 23 and 24 November, with the first team involved in a 50 over match at Umzinto, the second side playing a 40 over encounter against Verulam at Sidmore, the third team playing DHS Rhythm 4 at S.L.Singh 1 and the sixth team taking on Newlands three at Newlands. All other teams have byes.
