Rugby tourney hailed a success

Good rugby was played at this year's SPAR KZN Primay School’s Rugby Tournament.

THREE-HUNDRED and thirty exhausted bodies concluded the seventeenth SPAR KZN Primay School’s Rugby Tournament at Woodburn Stadium on the weekend.

KwaZulu-Natal’s finest young aspiring rugby players converged on Pietermaritzburg to strut their skills in the three day tournament. A total of 27 games were played over the weekend, with each division having three tough games a day. Six regions participated, including Durban Coastals, Midlands, Northern Natal, Pinetown and Districts, Southern Coastals and Zululand, all getting a game a day.

In the Merit division of the U13A sides, Durban Coastal and the Midlands didn’t drop a game over the three days. In the final game of the three days, the two teams clashed to a 5-5 draw proving how level the two teams were.

In the U13B sides the Durban Coastal team were the only team not to drop a game; they opened up their scorecard trouncing the team from Northern Natal 74-5 on Thursday.

Fourty-four boys have been invited back to participate in the next round of trials on Wednesday 28 May. These boys will make up the two teams, the U13A KZN side that will be competing in the Craven Week in Durban and the U13B KZN team that will travel to Sasolburg.

Twenty-two in the U12 age group have also been invited back to the next trials for selections for the U12 KZN side that will travel to Vryheid.

Tournament director, Louis Botha said: “A superb festival! Boys were all given an opportunity to realise their potential, discover the value of courage and play the great game of rugby with free abandon.”

MD for SPAR KZN, Rob Philipson said: “There was some incredibly hard rugby being played. I believe that each and every one of these guys can be proud of themselves. They have represented their regions with pride. To the boys advancing to the next round, good luck.”
