Minishova encourages child health

THE Tsogo Sun Amashova, KwaZulu Natal’s biggest cycling event, is bringing back the Mini Shova to add a special fun and health element for Durban's youngest bikers, on Saturday 11 October at Sunkist Beach, Suncoast.
It will be divided into two distance categories, a 5km event that starts at 7.30am, followed by a 1km event that starts at 8.30am.
Registration times are on Thursday 9 October from 1pm to 6pm at the Suncoast Conference Centre, Friday 10 October from 9am to 6pm at the Suncoast Conference Centre and Saturday 11 October at 7am at Sunkist beach.
There is a R75 entry fee for three to five year olds and a R90 entry fee for six to eight year olds. This includes a medal and a beach ball.
According to Race Director, Annie Batchelder, there were two important reasons for adding a children’s event to the much anticipated flagship road race that takes place over 106km from Pietermaritzburg to Durban as well as the 65km half challenge and a 35km fun ride starting from Hillcrest.
“Firstly, we want to promote family fun at the Amashova and what better way than by including kids in an event that their parents hold in high regard. Secondly, we are all aware of the worrying increase in childhood obesity in this country. We believe that, because cycling is regarded as fun and not formal exercise, the more kids we can get riding bikes through our events, the better,” she said.
The Amashova kid’s cycle events take place on a traffic-free route with safety being the organisers’ priority. The emphasis is on participation and not podium-chasing.
