Quins win league match

Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club took on a 50 over double header at the weekend.

THERE was a full round of official league cricket matches played out on Sunday 12 October and the Harlequins Cricket Club’s first team had a 50 over double header on Saturday in stream one the KZNCU Challenge League.

Umzinto batted first and the ascendancy of their upper middle order was short lived. Strike bowler Kevin Kettle delivered with consistent pace removing both Umzinto’s opening batsman as well as two lower midle order opposition, taking four wickets for 32 runs in 10 overs. Wayne Rittmuller took three wickets for 38 runs in 10 overs. Right arm wrist spinner Dieter Liebenberg took two wickets for seven runs in six overs.

Quins began their quest for victory in urgent fashion with Dylan Labuschagne scoring 17 runs and Shaun Edward added 28 runs, not out in short time. But it was the effort of Jaque Strydom who made short work of the Umzinto’s attack with an undefeated innings of 69 runs which included two sixes and eight fours. Quins required just 18,2 overs to pass their target of 121 runs for the loss of a mere wicket, ensuring an expected victory with a bonus point.

However things were quite different in the the second 50 over challenge league encounter of the weekend against Simplex RHCSC. Quins won the toss and elected to field first. Quins conceded 181 runs in 27,1 of their reduced allocation of 28 overs, taking all wickets. Dieter Liebenberg took two wickets for 28 runs in six overs and Dylan Labuschagne took three wickets. Quins eventually succumbed in the 24th over with the score on 123.

Other results: Quins 3 vs Pinetown. Pinetown scored 243 runs (Shane Manicom 3/30, Warren Torguis 39 runs, Josh Henry 98 runs). Pinetown won by 33 runs. Quins 5ths vs Verulam. Verulam 89 runs (Theo van Heerden 3/16, Coennie Germishuizen 37 runs). Quins won by seven wickets.

Quins U11s vs Chesterville. Quins U11s won by 126 runs.

Junior Traing will be at Harlequins on Thursday at 5pm and seniors will practice on Friday at 4.30pm.
