CPF hosts running events

THE Durban North-Umhlanga community policing forum will organise a series of organised running events through the streets of Durban North.

The Durban North Umhlanga CPF Nite Series is the brainchild of CPF members Arianne Hayes-Hill and Andrew Wood who recruited the services of event organiser Dave Ward and got the buy-in of Durban North councillor, Shaun Ryley.

Wood says that the plan is to host night runs on a quarterly basis to coincide with the seasons.

The first race will be on Friday, 24 October under the guise of the Spring Run followed by the Summer Run in January.

The race is set to be run on the streets of Durban North, starting and finishing at Crusaders Sports Club. There will be a 5km fun run/walk and a 10km race for more competitive runners. All entrants (5km and 10km) will start at 6.30pm, with the 10km batch doing a second lap of the same route.

The 10km race will have a water table at the halfway mark (back at Crusaders), and a cut-off will be implemented at the same spot at 7.15pm.

Anyone wishing to enter the race may do so at the “Sport Zone” store at Kensington Square between 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday. The fees for pre-entry will be R50 for the 5km event and R70 for the 10km event.

On-the-day or late entries will take place at Crusaders Sports Club between 4pm and 6pm and will cost R70 for the 5km and R90 for the 10km.

The money raised will in turn be used by the CPF to implement security initiatives around Durban North. In this way, the community will benefit significantly in the long run. He also appealed to families and runners from further afield in the city to join in on the race.

Event organiser, Dave Ward promised a lively family atmosphere with post-race festivities at Crusaders including food and drinks stands, live bands and more entertainment.
