Local surfers do well at World Junior Championships
Dylan Lightfoot and Slade Prestwich make it into Round 3 at Allianz ASP World Junior Championships in Portugal.
LOCAL surfer, Slade Prestwich, has joined Dylan Lightfoot from Jeffreys Bay, in Round 3 of the Allianz ASP World Junior Championships in Portugal.
Lightfoot posted the first success by a member of the ASP Africa squad when he won the final heat of Round 1 on Monday and advanced directly to Round 3.
The standalone event that crowns the 2014 ASP World Junior Champions and offers invaluable access into the ASP Prime events during 2015 to the top four men and two women, is contested by squads of competitors aged 20-and-younger selected by the seven ASP Regional offices.
Lightfoot, who likened the waves for the event to those at the Point in his hometown of Jeffreys Bay, was joined in Round 3 Prestwich after the Durbanite outpointed Juninho Urcia (Peru) in their elimination Round 2 encounter.
Prestwich’s task will be difficult as he takes on Joshua Moniz (Hawaii), the top point scorer in Round 1, while Lightfoot faces a tough battle against ASP North America top seed Parker Coffin in Round 3 with the winner progressing to the last 16 when competition recommences.
The Allianz ASP World Junior Championships runs from 25 October to 2 November in playa de Ribeira d’Ilhas, Ericeira, Portugal.
