AmaShuga is on the way

Get ready for the next diabetes awareness walk, the amaShuga Walk for Wellness, in 2015.

ORGANISERS Nerve Events and Diabetes SA are pleased to announce the re-launch of the newly named amaShuga Walk for Wellness, previously the Global Diabetes Walk Durban.

amaShuga Walk for Wellness takes place on 1 March 2015 at 8am at the Amphitheatre on the Lower Marine Parade and will also include a wellness expo, where free blood sugar and blood pressure testing will take place.

Jenny Russell from Diabetes SA, said: “The aim of the walk is to educate people on diabetes which is reaching epidemic proportions globally. Overweight and obesity is an emerging health problem in KZN, particularly in women. Many women living in urban areas of high HIV prevalence perceive themselves to be thinner than their actual body mass index (BMI), which may be a barrier to weight loss management. According to the Stats SA report issued on 4 September 2014, diabetes is the second highest cause of death in eThekwini Metro, and the third highest cause of death in KZN.”

“The walk will cover a distance of 5km and we urge the public to support the event. You are also invited to bring your dogs along on a leash. The walk attracts about 2000 people and we would like to up that figure. The walk and wellness expo are also major fundraising exercises for Diabetes SA Durban,” said Pat Bonini from Nerve Events.

The women thanked The South African Sugar Association (SASA) who has made it possible for the walk to go ahead.

Local wellness celebrity Lisa Raleigh will once again be the MC for the event.

Entry fee for the event is R50 per person and details of the event can be found on https://globaldiabetesrunwalkdurban.blogspot.com/

The public can also email mw.nerve@mweb.co.za for more information on the walk and how to get involved as a sponsor or exhibit at the wellness expo.
