Mixed bag of results for Quins
Harlequins Cricket Club's teams took on teams from other areas at the weekend.
SIX of Umbilo Harlequins Cricket club’s teams played scheduled league matches during the course of the weekend.
The U11s versed a motivated Umgababa team, however none of Quins batsmen really excelled to any extent, but consistent contributions by four of the top order batsmen enabled Quins to accumulate 144 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 30 overs. Cole Brady and Jamie van Niekerk’s opening partnership comprised equal contributions of a baker’s dozen each, Jarod Finlay scored 15 runs and Reece Manicom top scored with 17 runs.
Umgababa's top order batsmen proved difficult to dislodge as Quins bowlers toiled away at their objective in initially restricting Umgababa’s run rate to less than three per over. However the opposition's lower middle order and tail proved fickle and fragile and succumbed quite easily.
Quins most successful bowler was Jamie van Niekerk who sensationally captured three Umbagaba wickets consecutively in three deliveries for just six runs in two overs, backed up by Biran Rachman who claimed two wickets for 14 runs in three overs and Keegan Williams who got two wickets for 13 runs in four overs. Quins won this league match by 64 runs.
The most surprising result of the weekend for Quins came from the U13 team. Having to play their match against FAM three players short, Quins batted first, with their opening star Tyler Jordan accumulating an undefeated century and Heath Manicom striking 72 runs, taking Quins through to what was perceived to be an incredible total of 262 runs for the loss of only two wickets in 30 overs. FAM were dismissed for 71 runs in just eight overs. Craig Simes claimed three wickets for a single run in three overs and Declan Williams took two wickets for seven runs in three overs.
Quins U13s won by 192 runs. Special mention must be made of the efforts of seven year old Brody Jordan who made his debut for the club in the team. Brody never had the opportunity to bat but bowled two economical overs for five runs.
Quins sixth team played at Siripat Road 2. Harlequins batted first and managed a very good 181/8 in 30 overs. Dylan Jenkins played an excellent knock and was unfortunately bowled for 99 in the last over of the innings unselfishly attempting to push the teams score along. He was supported by Dean Jordaan 20 and Craig Laing 19. Simplex made a three wicket victory.
On Sunday Quins second team took on East Coast 2 in a 40 over a side Challenge Reserve match. Quins made 213 runs. Quins bowlers had no problem in knocking over the lower middle order and tail end of East Coast batting line up to win the match by a ton of runs in the 32nd over. Seam bowler Tim Hodkinson took two wickets for 17 runs in two overs and Saint John Piek captured two wickets for 21 runs in eight overs.
The third team took on a potent Crusaders third side in a 30 over division one match . Crusaders amassed 263 runs in 30 overs losing three wickets. Some noteworthy 20s were made by Quins upper order batsmen: 24 runs by Brett Williams, 22 runs by Warren Torguis, 25 runs by Cameron Reid and 25 runs by Josh Brady, taking Quins through to 147 runs in 30 overs, Quins 3 losing out to Crusaders by 116 runs.
Quins 5th team lost by 115 runs when they took on DHS/ Rhythm 5 at Bayview in a 30 over division 3 match. DHS/ Rhythm batted first scoring 213. Clinton Abrahams and Theo van Heerden captured two wickets each. Trent de Villiers claimed a wicket with an economical spell of six overs for 19 runs. Quins responded with 98 runs all out in 20 overs. Clinton Abrahams top scored with 39 runs.
All Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club teams have league matches on 17 and 18 January.
Training for juniors will be on Thursday at 5pm and seniors at 4.30pm on Friday.
