Soccer squad appeals for help
Senior citizens playing for various KZN teams got together for a bring-and-share last week.
WOMEN from local senior citizens' soccer teams had a get-together at Kenneth Gardens last week, to celebrate the new year.
The women, who play for teams in Mzinyathi, Makhuta, Bester, Umlazi and Durban Central, enjoyed time of prayer and socialising afterwards, in preparation for the year's events.
According to Jeannette Mzobe-Makhanya, the women are all over 60 years old, and will be starting to play league games every two months this year.
A squad was selected last month, and will start training in preparation for the games which will take place as far afield as Pretoria.
“The teams were started in 2012 by Amandla Badala Sporting Wellness Association, which is affiliated to SAFA. The aim is to encourage elderly people to be fit and active and take care of their bodies. No one is looking after senior citizens and we urge businesses or individuals to come together and do something for those who can't get out of their homes and who feel helpless,” said Jeannette.
She urged people to assist with soccer kit and transport for the new soccer squad. If anyone can help, contact Bongi Gumede on 074 327 2982.
