Junior hockey registration begins at Riverside
Registration for junior players is underway at Riverside Hockey Club as they get ready for the 2015 season.
RIVERSIDE Hockey Club (RHC) is opening its doors again to the greater Durban community to register for the 2015 season.
The local club, which is widely recognised for implementing the leading junior hockey club programme in South Africa, is officially open for registration and yet again they are appealing to all local families to socialise and interact in a healthy and fun environment through their junior division offering.
According to Riverside Hockey Club's Marketing head, Terence Kidd, 2015 has so much in store for local up-and-coming hockey stars with the Reach Programme (sponsored by Varsity College), which is a unique opportunity to further prepare 12 to 15-year-old players for senior hockey in a fun but challenging environment, while the mini hockey festivals are always a hit with the younger hockey players and their parents. The mini hockey season begins in April and ends in August and caters to youngsters from three to 11 years of age.
Kidd said members of RHC can also look forward to some additional offerings on the club calendar for the whole family to enjoy this season. “Some of our more recent programmes and tournaments have gone from strength to strength – like the Reach Programme and the Greenfield/Riverside Elite Club Challenge in July, which are going to be even bigger and better this year,” he enthused.
Riverside Sports have completed the renovations to their onsite facilities so spectators and players can enjoy a truly world class offering with a brand new club house and changing rooms adjacent to their new turf. “One of these newly laid pitches has the same Greenfields surface that was played on at the 2014 Hockey World Cup in Holland. No other local hockey club in South Africa offers its members this kind of facility, which we are extremely proud of and thankful to the management of Riverside Sports”, added Kidd.
The youth teams at the club, which comprise players from the ages of 13 to 15 years old, begin their season on 16 March with sessions taking place every Monday from 6pm. Training sessions for RHC’s mini hockey players start on the 17 April and the young players fall into four categories: little tots (3 to 4), big tots (5 to 6), U7, U9 and U11. Mini hockey sessions take place on Fridays after 5pm and vary from 45 minutes to 80 minutes, depending on the age group.
The club’s mantra of 'Pure hockey enjoyment' reinforces this sentiment as well as a more holistic winning culture instead of placing emphasis on winning at all costs. “We constantly strive to teach kids and remind parents that winning isn’t everything and to rather place importance on being good sports and encouraging interaction with other people from different backgrounds within our community,” stated RHC’s head of junior hockey, Derek Field.
