Opposition too strong for Quins

Southern Natal beat Harlequins first team in a the last Challenge League match of the season.

UMBILO Harlequins Cricket Club’s first team played their final 50-over stream one Challenge League match of the current season against Southern Natal at the weekend.

Quins’ Dylan Labuschagne and Adam Mather compiled an opening partnership of 22 runs. Sean Edward’s heavy bat struck a multitude of boundaries inclusive of four sixes. Ryan Baronet hit two sixes and a four in his contribution of 29 runs to aid Quins’ first team through to a below par total of 163 runs in 38 of their reduced allotment of 45 overs.

Abdur Rehman’s in swingers accounted for a Southern Natal opening batsman’s dismissal in the second over. However, neither opening bowler was ultra penetrative despite an edged delivery by Asley Lombard in the fourth over, from Abdur Rehman being dropped by wicket keeper Tyrelle Smith.

Right arm seamer Adam Mather replaced Abdur Rehman for the duration of nine continuous overs conceding 34 runs. Right arm wrist spinner Dieter Liebenberg was at his usual best capturing three wickets for 23 runs in nine overs. After the dismissal of Ashley Lombard who did most of Southern Natal’s ball striking, Quins thought that they might have an chance of dismissing the less aggressive middle order and tail-end batsmen who graced the creases.

However, Quins’ bowling attack was unable to dismiss more than six Southern Natal batsmen before the opposition surpassed Quins’ total in the 35th over.

Southern Natal won by four wickets.

Other team results: Quins 3rds played Berea Rovers 3. Quins 3 made 100 runs (Brett Williams scored 41 runs). Berea Rovers 3 made 55 runs in 16,4 overs for the loss of six wickets, at which stage rain caused the abandonement of the match. Brett Williams was man of the match by capturing four wickets in two overs.

Quins 4 played Delta 5. Delta 5 made 110 runs (Huey Naicker 14/2; Pierre Horn 16/2; Lennon Singh 3/23 runs).

Quins 4 were at 30 runs when rain delayed play. The result was perceived a draw.

Quins 5ths versed Phoenix 5. Quins scored 112 runs (Clint Abrahams made 29 runs; Quintin Oosthuysen scored 21 runs; Jarod Murgatroyd got 24 runs). The match was abandoned due to rain and was deemed a draw.

Quins U11s played ACC. Quins scored 94 runs (Deen Fredericks 20 runs; Spencer Peters 10 runs; Jaan Fredericks 2/7). ACC won the game.
