Quins win group match

Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club won its group match against Tongaat by 15 runs.

UMBILO Harlequins first team took on Tongaat in a 20 over group match at Harlequins on Sunday.

Despite losing the toss of the coin and having to bat first, Quins lost their openers for 17 runs in the fourth over and the middle order set about their task with enthusiastic zeal. Ryan Baronet struck two boundaries in his innings of 18 runs but was bowled out in the eleventh over. Kevin Kettle pulled a delivery for six runs during his innings of 21 runs being caught a deep long on in the twelfth over. Devan Dippenaar continued with his great form in his third match of the current season, striking four fours and a six in his innings of 33 runs and was stumped by the wicket keeper of a slow bowler in the nineteenth over to take Quins through to a moderate total of 108 for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs.

Tongaat’s innings was a spirited performance until the introduction of the slow right arm unorthodox bowler who had an immediate impact on the match by capturing three wickets for 14 runs. Fast bowler Kevin Kettle took three wickets for 30 runs off four overs and left arm unorthodox bowler Dylan Labuschagne captured two wickets for four runs in eighth deliveries to take Quins to a victory by 15 runs in 15,2 overs, having dismissed all Tongaat’s batsmen.

Other team results: Quins U13s played Chesterville. Chesterville made 79 runs and Quins made 92 runs for the loss of six wickets (Tyler Jordan, Neo Jones and Aiden Reid two wickets each, Tyler Jordan made 18 runs and Corban Stubs made 29 runs).

The first team have a double header involving one 20 over morning match against UKZN at Harlequins on Sunday 22 March one 20 over match in the afternoon against Umlazi at Comtech which will conclude all league matches for the club for the current season.

The club’s annual awards event will be at the Fynnland Combined Sports Club, Lt King Park, Fynnland from 6pm on Friday 27 March.

A six-a-side tourney will be held at the Harlequins cricket fields, Van Riebeeck Park on Saturday 28 March.
