DurbaNite race this Friday
Get energised in the third DurbaNite race is on this Friday, 24 April from 6.30pm at Moses Mabhida's People's Park.
RUNNING in the dark in the city, may seem a bit sketchy but, deck out runners or walkers with colourful apparel and you have the DurbaNite Race, a moving, living, breathing, light show on the third Friday of every month. The third race is on this Friday, 24 April from 6.30pm at Moses Mabhida’s People’s Park.
The conditions are set for a party run not necessarily a Personal Best (PB) and with Durban’s beautiful weather conditions and scenic views, this is fast becoming a popular and colourful race as it brings families together and injects life back into the City.
This initiative has taken Durban by storm according to Phindi Gule, who started the initiative a few months ago. “I’m passionate about running and healthy living and I want to spread the word through this race. Furthermore, I’ve always wanted to assist Ithembalabantu Clinic (an AIDS Clinic South of Durban) with building an area where their patients could exercise so this became a natural and meaningful platform to raise funds as some of the proceeds collected go towards the project” said Gule, the founder of the race and Phindi Gule Marketing and Communications.
The 5km race started with just over 300 runners and has to date grown to almost 1000 runners and walkers alike. The flat, friendly and maybe fast course mostly run around Durban’s promenade and the City, making it a safe and contained night run all on hard surface.
The race comes alive with runners, amazing DJ’s/ announcers and dancers along the route. “We are now giving Durbanites a chance to enhance it, take back the streets one kilometre at a time! Runners connect with one another and are always inspired by how the city is the playground,” added Gule.
Participants are urged to light it up as much as they like and encouraged to dress up in colourful gear, with glow necklaces, glow and light-up bracelets and glow face paint. The last 500m area lighting transforms all participants into an electrified field of happy runners and walkers alike as they take their last steps to finish the race!
The 5km course starts and finishes at Moses Mabhida Stadium (People’s Park).
