Top SA surfers enter championship event

Top South African surfers have been entered into the JBU Supertrials in June.

DURBAN surfer, Slade Prestwich is one of the South African surfers entered into the JBU Supertrial in June.

Twenty-four of the country's best surfers will compete for that one slot into the WSL Championship Tour's JBay Open, and a minimum prize of US$9000 (ZAR109k).

The JBU Supertrial has a waiting period of 1 to 12 June, and the entries for the event close Monday 11 May. There is a strict policy of no entry no invite and surfers will not be automatically invited into the event based on surfing skills or contest records.

Slade Prestwich is a big-hitter from Durban who won the Volcom VQS Global Championships at Cloudbreak, Fiji in 2013. That year he also placed third in the JBay Open, and is no slouch when it comes to riding the perfect walls of Supertubes. Slade is currently competing on the WQS and is set for big results.

Another local surfer is Umhlanga Rocks’ Beyrick de Vries, who made a huge statement when he snagged a giant wave at Sunset Beach in Hawaii in 2013 in the Vans Triple Crown Of Surfing event, and the resultant barrel saw him score a deserved 10-point ride and had the crowds screaming their appreciation. Beyrick was a JBU Supertrial trialist last year.

“It has been great to see some of the best surfers in the country submit their entries into the event. We're looking forward to the rest of the entries,” said event organiser and JBU representative Koffie Jacobs.
