Locals prepare for Cave Rock
Local surfers and bodyboarders will be preparing for the Cave Rock Invitational this month.
THE Cave Rock Invitational takes place anytime between 9 and 22 June, and local Durban surfers and bodyboarders will be going all out to win the title.
The event was started by Michael Ostler, purely to create a platform on which the local community of Durban could take advantage of and grow as potential professional athletes.
“I have traveled the world riding waves, I have always felt that we have the best wave riders right here in South Africa, however the economy disables us from traveling and competing, taking on the world. So I thought, if we can get to them, why not bring them here!” said Michael.
That was the start of the Cave Rock Invitational. “Cave Rock is a world class break with extreme localism, so getting the locals on board was tough, but hearing what they had to say about the progression this event offers the community and local South Africans was amazing. These guys are opening their sacred break to the world, allowing them to share waves with them and compete against them all in hopes to grow the sport of wave riding and allow for opportunity to the youth and local community. Its truly indescribable what these guys are and the event are doing. So my respect and support goes out to them all!” said Michael.
The event supports both surfing and bodyboarding, all in one division, chasing the same title.
This year three world champions will be taking part in the event, big wave legend Grant Twiggy Baker, dropknee world champion and renowned photographer, Sacha Specker and two time bodyboarding world champion, Andre Botha.
“In the mix we have incorporated the local community champion Dean Conway from Treasure Beach, allowing him to share the water with some of his idols,” said Michael.
World Games Champions Iain Campbell and Tristan Roberts will be taking part in the event as well as three incredible athletes, all with world tour background and experience, world tour contender from Richard's Bay, Mark McCarthy, Puerto Rico's world tour contender, Jared Housten and all the way from Hawaii, world tour contender Jacob Romero.
The event day will be announced four days prior to the day, all swell and wind dependent, and this can all be monitored on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/caverockinvitational
