Rugby coaching tips

Rikus Goosen from a local sports academy gives tips on the forwards.

RIKUS Goosen from Rugga Skills Rugby Academy offers tips to rugby coaches, this week focusing on the forwards.

This week we start off with the loose head prop, who has the number 1 on the rugby jersey and is also a specialised position.

“There is a lot of technique required in this position to make you a competitive prop. A prop's major role is to support the hooker in the scrums, as well as

supporting in the line-out, rucks and mauls,” said Goosen.

He said the prop should also be as challenging to the opposition as possible when they have the ball.

“There is a definite difference between the loose head prop and the tight head prop. We will discuss this in due course. Remember the fitter you are, the easier the

game will be,” he said.
